Most cruise liner has a “whale avoidance training” program for navigation officers and lookouts. The training certificate expires after one year and needs to be renewed each year. The training concentrates on how to look for whales, patterns of different species of whales and what to do when a whale is sighted. There are strict regulations in place for areas with dense whale populations, such as Glacier Bay in Alaska. Stringent controls are in place for reduced ship speeds and what to do when sighting a whale nearby.
